Impact Report: Mobilizing Hope in Nigeria

Background
In Nigeria, Sr. Maria Chikwado and the Immaculate Heart Sisters coordinate vital outreach to impoverished and remote communities through Caringaid, the congregation’s philanthropic initiative. Led by seven dedicated Sisters, the program serves as a lifeline for the sick, women, children, and vulnerable adults. Their mission focuses on addressing both material and spiritual poverty, providing everything from emergency food supplies to educational scholarships and agricultural empowerment.
In the past, the Sisters relied on hiring expensive third-party vehicles to reach these areas and provide services, a method that became financially unsustainable due to Nigeria’s challenging economic climate.
Challenge
The lack of a dedicated, reliable vehicle created a systemic barrier to the Sisters’ impact, leaving hundreds of people in need of service without timely care.
Sr. Maria and her team faced several critical hurdles:
- High Operational Costs: Frequent hiring of vehicles for transporting supplies and the elderly incurred heavy expenses.
- Inaccessibility: Remote areas were often unreachable via standard transport, leading to missed outreach opportunities.
- Delayed Medical Care: Transporting the sick and elderly to hospitals was difficult and inconsistent.
- Logistical Bottlenecks: The delivery of heavy items, such as farm implements, seedlings, and construction materials for those displaced by violence, was frequently hindered.
- Regional Instability: Internally displaced families in areas plagued by bandits and violence were in desperate need of regular support that the Sisters could not consistently provide.
Solution
With a donor-funded grant from Sisters Rising Worldwide, the mission sought to achieve transportation independence. Sr. Maria conducted extensive surveys to find a robust solution to meet their unique challenges.
With their funding, the Sisters acquired an all wheel drive truck, a rugged vehicle specifically chosen for its ability to navigate Nigeria's difficult, unpaved terrain.

Results
The acquisition of the vehicle transformed Sr. Maria’s mission from a reactive service to a proactive force for community development.
- Expanded Reach: The Sisters successfully visited all targeted communities within six months, reaching hundreds of people in need.
- Systemic Empowerment: Beyond simple aid, the vehicle delivered seedlings and tools to beneficiaries enabling them to achieve self-employment through farming.
- Crisis Response: The Sisters reached four internally displaced communities devastated by violence, providing bags of rice and essential supplies to families who had lost everything.
- Individualized Care:
- Medical Support: The vehicle facilitated hospital visits for beneficiaries, providing a bridge to life-saving medical care.
- Mobility for the Elderly: The Sisters reached Lucy, a woman located in a remote area of Enugu, to deliver a wheelchair and other assistance that restored her mobility and dignity.
Sr. Maria reports, “Without our vehicle, our ability to locate Lucy and other beneficiaries would have been severely hindered. SRW's contributions are essential in furthering our work and making the world a better place. We deeply appreciate your commitment to our cause.”
